Henryk Wieniawski was a virtuoso compared to Paganini. He played in almost all European countries (in some, numerous times), USA, Canada and Cuba. Had over 130 appearances in Polish towns alone. Performed solo, with his brother Joseph - a pianist, and with other outstanding artists, incl. Anton Rubinstein, exquisite chamber musician.
Wieniawski combined intense concert activity with composing, which he begun as early as in his childhood. Wrote ca. 50 virtuoso and lyrical pieces (intended mainly for own delivery) full of reference to national and folk tradition (polonaises, mazurkas, kujawiak dances). Wrote fantasies on opera themes (e.g. Faust by Gounod), which enjoyed immense popularity in the 19th century. Author of etudes and two virtuoso concert pieces for violin and orchestra still performed by outstanding soloists. His most renown pieces are recurrently recorded for leading record labels.
